prokopetz:

Level 1: There exists a single objectively correct translation, and all localisatons should use it.

Level 2: Itโ€™s impossible for a translationโ€™s text ever to perfectly match the connotations and cultural context of the original text, so all translations are equally wrong.

Level 3: None of the original textโ€™s readers brought the exact same set of assumptions and experiences to the act of reading it as the author brought to the act of writing it; before we can judge a translation as โ€œrightโ€ or โ€œwrongโ€, we have to ask: right or wrong from whose perspective?

Level 4: Localisation is effectively a work of original authorship, so translation choices cannot be โ€œrightโ€ or โ€œwrongโ€ in the abstract; they can only be more or less suited for a particular purpose.

Level 5: Add more dick jokes.

Hm. I must say, I was very anti-sport before but after being on tumblr.com for a while I definitely identify with jocks. Unlike nerds, theyโ€™ve never made me read sherlock mpreg miscarriage on the Harry Potter train AU Masterposts. They only wanna kick their balls and take booty pics. Iโ€™m sorry i took u for granted, jocks

The jocks were only trying to protect us all this time

They pushed nerds into lockers when no one else did

>Playing DnD
>Wizard gets into a fight with an important NPC
>When
the wizard realizes who the NPC is, he apologizes and asks “As a token
of my goodwill, would you like me to make you a magical sword?”
>NPC agrees
>Wizard casts polymorph and turns them into a sword.
>Argues that the NPC shouldn’t have a will save because they agreed to it.]

hey guys fun fact โ€œuwu take a bubble bath and eat chocolateโ€ self care and โ€œget out of bed and take a mcfucking showerโ€ self care arenโ€™t mutually exclusive and making fun of the former bc u think the only self care mentally ill people should practice is the latter is uh how do i say. Odd to say the least

im having a bad executive dysfunction day & i just hung up my clean laundry & put the dirty laundry in the washing machine for tomorrow & tidied up the kitchen (wiped down the counters+stovetop and washed the pots i used to make dinner) so now iโ€™m going to drink chocolate milk and build a blanket fort nd play pokemon for the rest of the night as a reward. see how that works

#literally both โ€˜uwu self-careโ€™ and โ€˜you need to do this self-careโ€™ are reliant on each other??? #one is to take care of your physical needs/responsibilities and the other is to keep you from becoming overwhelmed while doing so #and yeah sometimes you CANโ€™T do something and sometimes uwu doesnโ€™t work but hey when is anything 100% reliable?????ย (tags via @absolutebeeb)

YES THANK YOU!

1. Please please pretty please stop assuming that uwu self care bloggers are a) neglecting our responsibilities to a degree that is unreasonable for our situation or b) advocating that others should do so. It bothers me so much to see people sayingย โ€œBut you canโ€™t do that ALL the time!โ€ when weโ€™re not saying that.

2. If the reason why you donโ€™t like relaxation posts is because you have trouble getting stuff done and you want help with that, OWN THAT. It is OK to need help with getting yourself to do cleaning, take a shower, etc. and not really need reminders to relax. It is not OK to act as if relaxation posts are about laziness when they serve a really important purpose for a ton of people – abled and disabled, neurotypical and neurodivergent.

Growing up in an abusive household is a fucking trip dudeโ€ฆโ€ฆIf youโ€™ve never had someone angrily wash a dish at you or fold a sock in your direction then how are you gonna understand why I get nervous when you quietly do the laundry, or why I ask โ€œare you mad at me?โ€ when you set the bag of groceries down too hard? Itโ€™s a totally different way of living and it impacts you long after youโ€™ve left the situation.

This is so important.

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.โ€” James 5:1-6

At first I thought this was an angry Tumblr post but then it turned out to be the Literal Bible and it got 1000x better

As an Arctic researcher, Iโ€™m used to gaps in data. Just over 1% of US Arctic waters have been surveyed to modern standards. In truth, some of the maps we use today havenโ€™t been updated since the second world war. Navigating uncharted waters can prove difficult, but it comes with the territory of working in such a remote part of the world.

Over the past two months though, Iโ€™ve been navigating a different type of uncharted territory: the deleting of what little data we have by the Trump administration.

At first, the distress flare of lost data came as a surge of defunct links on 21 January. The US National Strategy for the Arctic, the Implementation Plan for the Strategy, and the report on our progress all gone within a matter of minutes. As I watched more and more links turned red, I frantically combed the internet for archived versions of our countryโ€™s most important polar policies.

I had no idea then that this disappearing act had just begun.

Since January, the surge has transformed into a slow, incessant march of deleting datasets, webpages and policies about the Arctic. I now come to expect a weekly email request to replace invalid citations, hoping that someone had the foresight to download statistics about Arctic permafrost thaw or renewable energy in advance of the purge.

You know how people always lament the burning of the library of Alexandria? All that lost knowledge? How much greater civilization couldโ€™ve been if such knowledge hadnโ€™t been destroyed?

We gonna keep letting that happen? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€
