obviously barbara has, but she doesn’t want to scandalise ian by saying it in his presence. she saves that for drinks with the doctor

One & Barbara frequently takes a glass and just rant about everything and everyone that bothers them. There’s a lot of ‘Fuck’ and quite some alcohol.

Meanwhile, Ian bakes cookies with Susan and they eat them with milk while wearing pyjamas and fuzzy slippers.

In the first serial of Doctor Who, Ian has some hazy recollection that Susan Foreman’s grandfather is “a doctor, isn’t he?” and so he addresses him at first as “Doctor Foreman” and the Doctor doesn’t answer to it so Ian just starts calling him “Doctor” instead. Nobody ever asks the Doctor what he wants to be called, and he never introduces himself, so Ian just decides to start calling him “Doctor” and he just happens to answer to it.

In the entire first season the Doctor never says that his name is a secret and he never tells people that he is “The Doctor” or even a doctor, with only a single exception–in part two of The Aztecs he tells Cameca “No, no, they call me the Doctor. I am a scientist, an engineer. I’m a builder of things.” In which case “they” might well mean a general nonspecific “they” or it might mean his companions specifically; it’s not clear from context.

This is not easy to reconcile with later stories in which the Time Lords know The Doctor as “The Doctor”, but I’m a big fan of understanding earlier eras of Doctor Who on their own terms first, treating later continuity developments as a secondary concern, and so when watching sixties Doctor Who I like to think of “The Doctor” as just a nickname Ian came up with that happened to stick, to the point where eventually he just calls himself that.

[8 gifs of the 1st doctor. gif 1: the doctor leans backwards against the tardis console, talking directly to the camera. their head is bandaged. the lighting is stark, the rest of the tardis is in darkness, and the doctor is brightly lit, nearly like a chiaroscuro painting. the camera is slowly zooming in towards their face. subtitles read “I said it would take the force of a total solar system to take the power away from my ship. gif 5: the doctor looks excited, holding their hands out in front of them and shaking them for emphasis. “A new birth, of a sun and its planets!”. They make two fists, and hold them in front of their mouth, as if they can’t contain their excitement. they then turn around.

gif 6: a new shot, the doctor clutches the tardis console and leans hunched over it. ian grabs them from behind by their shoulders. ian says “But, Doctor, where are we? When we left the planet Skaro, where did you ask the machine to take us to, Think Doctor!”. he shakes the doctor slightly for emphasis.
