Claiming you don’t need or want a safe space of any kind because “life isn’t safe” is the most obnoxious kind of bravery debate.
Life as an entity/overarching concept isn’t safe, sure, but we’re not talking about safety from random happenstance; we’re talking about things we can control. You could get hit by a car tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean you should take a bath with your toaster. Similarly, the fact that some people out there in the world might be callous and cruel is not a reason to avoid callousness and cruelty when you have the option. On the contrary: it’s a reason to insist on more exacting standards when you have the chance to do so.
I always wonder how many of the people who say things like this actually deliberately hang out with unpleasant assholes IRL.
Or, like, sleep with the front door unlocked. Or invite the whole neighborhood on their next date. Or let strangers smoke on your porch. Because choosing who you want in your personal sphere would be a “safe space”, and safe spaces are for snowflakes, right?
I think a big problem is that “safe space” can describe anything from “place where people are treated with basic civility and respect” to “nightmare echo chamber that punishes anyone who expresses any idea that the group, or the leader of the group, doesn’t like.”
Assholes deliberately misrepresent the former as the latter. Silly snowflakes! How dare you ask that people not be dicks to each other!
Quoting myself from a previous clarification:
The context here … is a Facebook post I made asking my friends to
describe what discursive norms help them feel safest and most able to
thrive. A friend of mine commented that they don’t maintain emotional
safe spaces because safety is a farce, which is incredibly disingenuous
to me – just the fact of having friends you like is an emotional
safe space. Do you actively hang out with people who make you
uncomfortable? Do you require that your friends treat you with respect
as a requirement for hanging out with them? If yes, congratulations –
you maintain an emotional safe space.*marries someone I hate*
*all my friends are transphobic, homophobic murder convicts*
*sleeps next to twelve starving tigers in a rusted cage*
*simultaneously has depression and owns several handguns*
*only eats food that is past its expiration date*
*house is located at the edge of a cliff*
*front door faces the cliff*
*bungee jumps to leave the house every morning*
*only music on my phone is Miley Cyrus*
TAKE THAT, SJWS
concept: my posts having an expiry date where yall can’t reblog them anymore after six months cause by then my whole humour and online persona will have changed again
#i was too excitable six months ago. now im older and world weary
Six months from now you’ll be too salty and cynical.
Unpopular opinion time: A lot of the hate Ayn Rand gets is because she was a womyn. The shit she says about self interest actually is very similar to other theories men have put forward and it is very telling that that is the thing she is most hated for. The number of “Ayn Rand hates children” jokes I see is just gross because like, when does a man ever get that shit? She is called rude, unemotional, ugly, unloving and basically a failed womyn by leftist men. And this is obvious misogyny? A million men advocate for the free market and of course Ayn Rand is the one that is hated because she was a womyn who interrupts men in interviews and advocates self interest!
At the end of the day a womyn advocating self interest and relationships based not on self sacrifice but on what you want and get fulfillment from is terrifying to leftist men because…well, what would that actually mean for womyn?
we don’t need to make fun of weird radfem terf tumblr anymore, they are mocking themselves with shit like this
defend ayn rand uwuw
“leftist men only hate here cause she is a womyn uwu”
i am at a loss of words how ridiculous this is.
“People only hate Thatcher because she’s female, not because she and Ronald Reagan were neoconservative imperialist besties.” – terf tumblr 2020
she advocated poor and queer women starving to death, what a wholesome radical womyn
this is ‘im not like those other girls’ as an ideology tbh
why do terfs call themselves “radical” when they’re just upholding the status quo
like how do they sit there and think “calling trans women men is a wild new concept that we are very revolutionary for saying”
Bigger question why do they call themselves “feminists”
@ myself

did they meant to say change genders instead of clothes? im so confused this reads like: Real women just wear the one filth encrusted garment! why do trans women think they’re so much better with their “doing laundry” privilege? i want answers

You know you’re living in some kind of Fukuyama-neoliberal hell when major news outlets can get away with silly bullshit like this. As if to imply that a strike can ever really be apolitical. Cultural hegemony is a real drag, man.
The descent into madness that was Star Trek: The Animated Series.
