There is a specific and terrifying difference between โ€œnever wereโ€ monsters and โ€œare not anymoreโ€ monsters

โ€œThe thing that was not a deerโ€ implies a creature which mimics a deer but imperfectly and the details which are wrong are what makes it terrifying

โ€œThe thing that was not a deer anymoreโ€ on the other hand implies a thing that USED to be a deer before it was somehow mutated, possessed, parasitically controlled or reanimated improperly and what makes THAT terrifying is the details that are still right and recognizable poking out of all the wrong and horrible malformations.

hey I totally fucked up and forgot the 3rd type, which is โ€œIs Not Anymore And Maybe Never Wasโ€ monsters

โ€œThe thing which was no longer a deer and maybe never wasโ€ implies a creature that, at first glance, completely appears to be a deer, but over time degrades very slowly until you realize (probably too late) that it is not a deer anymore, and had you seen it in this state first, you wouldnโ€™t have recognized it as a deer at all, and thereโ€™s a decent chance that it was never actually a deer to begin with but only a very good mimic, and what makes this one scary is the slow change from everything being right to everything being wrong, happening slowly enough that you donโ€™t even notice it until its too late, as well as the fact that something now so clearly not a deer could have fooled you to begin with.

fun fact: procrastination happens to animals too. itโ€™s a naturall thing.

animal equivalents for scrolling tumblr include:
ย – hamsters starting to wash their faces in inaproppriate situations
ย – hyenas stopping everything and starting to dig holes in the ground.

ย – seagulls starting to ruffle their feathers instead of doing important things

this happens for two reasons:ย

1) an animal is in the situation where none of the standard scenarious it has are fitting, so it does the next best thingย
(example: hamsters were put in a vibrating bowl, they couldnโ€™t run or attack, so in about a minute they stopped everything and started washing their faces.)

2) an animal has two conflicting instincts fighting for dominance, so the third one, usualy suppressed by them, kicks in.
(example: when two hyenas meet at the border of their territories, they have an instinct to protect their own territory conflict with an instinct not to cross someone elseโ€™s. they donโ€™t know if they need to attack or leave, so both start digging holes in the ground.
example: a seagull sitting on the nest needs to protect her children, but also has to go get some food. instead a seagull settles for ruffling her feathers for two hours.)

with humans itโ€™s usually the second reason.
(example: Iโ€™m tired and I want to go to sleep, but I should write an essay for tomorrow. both these things are important, so Iโ€™m procrastinating them by writing this post.)

nature is beautiful.
Iโ€™m gonna go to sleep now.

Honestly, digging holes in the ground to avoid dealing with a confrontation sounds like something I would do.
