Miss Major in The Trans List (2016)

The first picture shows cops leading a drag queen (as identified by Getty, though this term also referred generally to trans women). The source seems to be a 1962 photo by Getty Images from a ball that took place seven years before Stonewall, and she is probably being arrested for β€œmasquerading and indecent exposure” according to Getty.

The second image shows a crowd of angry people over the shoulders of two cops and a man in a suit who are facing them and holding them back, and is the only picture of the first night of the Stonewall Riots. (Wikimedia Commons copy).

The third image shows a crowd of people outside the West Side Savings Bank on the corner of Christopher Street (location of the Stonewall Inn), with a small group of cops in the foreground, on the fifth night of the Stonewall Riots. (NYT source)

the more i think about this

the more pissed a get. now, i’m not saying disney needs to make shang canonically bisexual (*cough* disney should definitely make shang canonically bisexual *cough*) but like…this changes some of the core lessons of the animated movie?? like

animated mulan:

  • shows a romantic relationships that is strongly rooted in friendship and mutual respect (unlike many other disney movies)
  • moral: gender is not your most important characteristic. your gender alone does not define who you are

live action mulan, apparently:

  • it’s totally healthy to date someone whose personality you actually can’t stand so long as You Want To Bang ThemΒ Β―_(ツ)_/Β―

and all of this…just to remove….any slight hint…….of bisexual subtext………

Can we also talk about the transphobic undertones here? Like, he hates this one soldier who is Suspiciously Not Performing Masculinity Quite Right…..up until the moment the (heteronormative) narrative reveals that soldier to actually be a Perfectly Bangable Cis Lady! Whew! (So gross…)
