me, someone with critical thinking skills: using slurs to attack people is bad, even if you do misspell them.

y’all, demons: hmm, that sounds pretty β€˜kweer’ of you to say.

Funny how its the queer community and queer pride and queer this and queer that but suddenly its a slur (-_-)/.

I’ve never even seen someone directly call someone kweer, I’ve only seen it used like in indirect mocking but even so, using a slur as an umbrella term is still calling people slurs so

oooooooooooooh my gooooooooooooooooooooooood ooooooooh my god. oh my god. ooooooooooh. my god oh my god

there are

ayellowbirds:

lionesses that grow manes and lions that don’t
fish and amphibians that change reproductive sex depending on age, environment, or availability of mate
an entire species where the vulva and clitoris adapted into an organ outwardly indistinguishable from a penis, complete with a scrotumβ€”spotted hyenas
some bearsΒ who show that as a mutation, including individuals known to have given birth
countless documented cases of same-sex partnerships in animals that mate for life
insects where the semen-bearing sex is the one that receives penetration and the ova-bearing sex is the one that has a penetrative phallus
seahorses, my gods, you should know about seahorses by now
β€œmale” cuttlefish that present as female and seek to mate with other females
countless species where the larger, more aggressive sex is female and the smaller, flashier one is male

but for your science fiction or fantasy setting, you decided that most nonhuman sapients have a strict gender binary that maps perfectly to contemporary western human cultural standards?

even humansΒ aren’t like that.

so i was under the impression that academia was a haven for queer studies but did you know practically no colleges (in the US anyway) offer straight up degrees in LGBT or queer studies? like you can minor in it at a few schools or have a concentration in it through other programs like gender or sexuality studies or in interdisciplinary programs, but in my research i have so far found ONE school that even offers a bachelor’s in lgbt studies–and it’s a small liberal arts college pretty much no one has heard of – it just goes to show how marginalized our histories and cultures still are

and this is particularly striking considering the heavy-weight academics who have done important scholarship relating to queer theory or lgbt history and areΒ  still big name faculty who draw applicants and prestige to these schools or, if they’re no longer alive, whose massive impact on academia remains to this day like Judith Butler, Foucault, Audre Lorde, Eve Sedgwick, June Jordan, Adrienne Rich, Sara Ahmed, Jack Halberstam, like the list goes on and onΒ

academia is willing to benefit financially and academically from queer scholars but won’t invest funding or manpower into cultivating lgbt studies itself

how did we go fromΒ β€œsome lgbt people aren’t comfortable being referred to as queer, so check in with people before you refer to them as queer” (reasonable) toΒ β€œif you are an lgbt person who chooses to reclaim the word queer you are still morally obligated to censor it for those who don’t” (understandable if you don’t want to reclaim, but it’s easy and free to just blacklist the word rather than police other people’s reclamation) toΒ β€œewwwww i hate when people come out as just β€˜queer’ lol” like i’m sorry i’ve had it i’m putting my foot down

p sure the op of that post has badly expressed the idea that they don’t like cishet women coming out as queer bc they peg their boyfriends or something; I don’t think they’re against the reclamation or use of the word queer by lgbt people

saying β€œi hate when people come out as justΒ β€˜queer’” is more thanΒ β€œbad expression,” there is absolutely no excuse or context that makes that statement okay

aceaventurine:

SayingΒ β€œWell, the Q is for Questioning!” is not enough to make the community a safe place for questioning people.

It’s great to include them, but it doesn’t mean a lot if in the meantime you constantly joke about people having an oppression fetish, trying to opt-out of their privilege out of guilt, or being silly cishets desperatly wanting to be β€œkweer” to be cool.

yeah i’m gonna have to ask discoursers on tumblr to stop sayingΒ β€˜kweer’ and then pretend like that somehow isn’t a slur, thanks.

also not every asshole making a bad take about butch women is aΒ β€˜queer theorist’

like i know none of you will stop because you are desperate to demonise queer folk as destructive, lesbophobic and out of touch, but thanks

Like a friend of mine pointed out that the rhetoric ofΒ β€˜butch women don’t belong in women’s spaces’ is more of a radfem position than a queer one, but y’all are just gonna ignore contributions by butch women to queer theory aren’t you.

>Β

Lesbian separatists such as Sheila Jeffreys argued that all forms of masculinity, including masculine butch women, were negative and harmful to women. The group of radical lesbians often credited with sparking lesbian feminism, Radicalesbians, called butch culture β€œmale-identified role-playing among lesbians”.

While butch-femme roles had previously been the primary way of identifying lesbians and quantifying lesbian relationships in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, lesbian feminist ideology had turned these roles into a β€œperversion of lesbian identity”.Β Lesbian feminism turned the public face of lesbians into white, middle class women, often excluding and alienating working class lesbians and lesbians of color.

But yeah all those queer theorists amirite?
