The reason the culture of ‘depression meme humour’ got big was because it was a rebellious backlash against a dominant social attitude that You Just Weren’t Trying Hard Enough which deliberately swept mental health issues under the rug. Turning ‘positivity’ into the cool new meme is a noble idea, but in practice, unless it’s done with care and understanding instead of just a desire to perform what people in your social circles seem to want to see, all it’s doing is recreating a culture of artificial cheerfulness, where deviation is punishable by ostracization. And that’s not a healthy or ‘positive’ environment for anyone.

I’m usually a big proponent of positive bandwagons – even if people only join them because they see it’s popular, they’re still getting exposure to a thing they might not have otherwise – but if the only reason you’re jumping on ‘positivity’ is so you can make snarky comments about all those losers still wallowing in last year’s meme, rather than out of genuine care and concern for people’s well-being, then there’s nothing at all positive about what you’re doing.

God, thank you… so much for this post.

i read the sentence “abusers groom their character witnesses as carefully as they groom their victims” (in a comment thread in response to a “but i know [the accused] and hes such a nice man!!”) and it’s blowing my mind a weird amount even though i guess i already knew that

Pros of my username: people always notice it right away and are forced to check out my blog in order to discover whether I’m the biggest douchebag in existence, then laugh with me when they realize I’m just trying to be funny

Cons of my username: anytime I try and say anything mildly controversial, the first attack anyone has against my point is “your username is yaoilover6969” and that’s it. One person tried to tell me that I shouldn’t tell them not to write pedo porn while having a user name like this, and I just said “I’m a gay and it’s a joke lol” and they still haven’t replied to me

straight ppl on tv who travel back in time and have to get the timeline back on track but they’re all “i can’t explain why but u got to trust me implicitly while i give u 0 info on the current situation, it’s really urgent too” uh? just say u traveled in time? u put ur damn serious voice on and explain the situation to your partner u dick

only people who identify as gnc are gnc….uwuwuwuwuwu

you know what? Yeah! Absolutely! Leave your uwus at the door

Because there isn’t one masculinity or femininity to measure up against.

Being autistic doesn’t mean that my expression or experience of gender doesn’t make me the peer of allistic people who share my gender.

Black womanhood doesn’t ‘conform’ to white womanhood but we don’t say all black women are gnc. We have decades of experience, growth, community building, dedicated to developing multiple expressions of gender that are not a “how much do you have in common with or look like Melania Trump” checklist.

It’s not about “you’re only something if you think you are in your imaagginnaatiioonnnn”– it’s about that it’s a horrific idea to say that the only true representative of somebody’s gender is the most privileged person. That if you’re not a straight, white, neurotypical, thin, reproductive femme cis woman, or a straight, white, neurotypical, fit, reproductive masc cis man, you’re somehow ‘not conforming’ to the image of those people. That you can’t ‘do’ gender as well as them.

It gets into the idea that it is the “function” of any person with gender to be as much like those people as possible. And it implies that if you are ‘defective’ in that respect in any way and experience discrimination that is intersectional with gender for any reason, you’re in the same boat with nonbinary and trans people. Which cis people are not.

also like it’s,,, gender expression. it’s something u consciously relate to. it’s certainly not innate. unless ur argument is that u think people destined to be GNC are decided at birth, gender conformity & non-conformity is a personal opt-in process.

like. if you’re against idpol or into materialist analysis or something, u need to come up w a better framework than deciding gender must be unchanging and innate (especially day to day gender expression of all things like, do u hear yourself? it’s gender fucking conformity,, it’s very literally a choice?)
