Honestly, as a German I can not quite understand the obsession of the English speaking world with the question whether a word exists or not. If you have to express something for which there is no word, you have to make a new one, preferably by combining well-known words, and in the very same moment it starts to exist. Agree?

Deutsche Freunde, could you please create for me a word for the extreme depression I feel when I bend down to pick up a piece of litter and discover two more pieces of litter?

    • um = around
    • die Welt = world
  • die Umwelt = environment
    • ver = prefix to indicate something difficult or negative, a change that leads to deterioration or even destruction that is difficult to reverse or to undo, or a strong negative change of the mental state of a person
    • der Müll = garbage, trash, rubbish, litter
    • -ung = -ing
  • die Vermüllung = littering
    • ver- = see before
    • zweifeln = to doubt
    • -ung = see before
  • die Verzweiflung = despair, exasperation, desperation

die Umweltvermüllungsverzweiflung = …

This is a german compound on the spot master class and I am LIVING

#my german is still too basic for this but I desperately want a compound word for how much these compound words piss me off

  • das Monster = monster
  • das Wort = word
  • der Groll = grudge, anger, malice, rancor

der Monsterwortgroll = …

Monsterwortbildungsimitationsunfähigkeitsverzweiflungsgroll

  • die Bildung = formation
  • die Imitation = imitation
    • un- = un-, in-
    • fähig = able
    • -keit = -ility
  • die Unfähigkeit = inability

der Monsterwortbildungsimitationsunfähigkeitsverzweiflungsgroll = anger about the inability to imitate the formation of monster words

Adulting tip: before you move in with someone, sit down and have a discussion about what a clean living space looks like. Doing this would have saved me so much aggravation in my life.

“But Jaqui,” I hear you asking, “why should we have to talk about it? Clean’s clean, right?” No, it’s not. And thinking cleanliness is a self-evident concept is a great way for screaming fights to happen down the line.

Here’s an example: to my mom, clean means that all the things in the space are not actively dirty, and are free of crumbs and food stains and the like. It doesn’t matter to her where you put your shit, so long as no one has to worry about bugs or stains or diseases. To my once-stepfather, clean meant that everything had a place where it belonged, and things were neat and organized, and there was no visible clutter. He gave less of a shit about crumbs under the microwave than he did about random papers on the coffee table. So she could spend all day working to make sure you could eat off every surface in the kitchen, and he would come home and be upset because she’d spent all that time and as far as he could tell, nothing was clean. Meanwhile, his obsessive organization drove my mom batshit because he would blithely organize away things that weren’t clean by her standards. Needless to say, that relationship did not end well.

So yeah. Have the talk, and figure out what your “augh, this is unlivable, we need to clean!” points are. You may not always be able to get a shared living space exactly as clean as you want it, but if you figure out what everyone needs to feel like they have a reasonably clean space, you’re much more likely to correctly conclude that, when someone makes an offhand comment about the mess getting to them, you’ll know they mean the dishes in the sink are bothering them, and that they don’t give a shit about the dust on the bookshelves, and can act accordingly.

I feel like those “sexism/gendered expectations hurt men too” things would be a lot more effective if they didn’t just focus on internal issues guys being afraid to express their feelings or wear pink and acknowledged that, as not all men are equal in society, more external things like acts of violence that men experience at the hands of other men is often in part due to feelings about proving one’s masculinity. There have been multiple studies on how sexism is a gateway to white supremacy, for example and certain acts of racist violence when the target is a man can be an example of a man experiencing the negative effects of another man’s attempt to fulfill what he sees as gendered expectations (in addition to racism, because intersectionality and all). Homophobic violence against gay and bi men is perhaps a more obvious example of men suffering due to expectations of masculinity. Heck, if we’re going to expand this and include boys and not just men, the abuse some boys experience at the hands of the adult men in their life are acts of toxic masculinity. I think that’s why I get kind of a bad vibe when I see “feminist responses” stating that the ways that men are negatively impacted by gender expectations is their own fault, because I really don’t think some adult man dealing with trauma from his abusive father or who has faced homophobic or racist violence is really to blame for that on a personal level.

Edit: MRAs, get off of my post. This was meant to criticize a specific issue within certain sects of feminism and your irrelevant ramblings about your issues with “females” are not adding at all to the discussion I was trying to start.

I was thinking about how you never really see older bi women portrayed or talked about in any way and how bisexuality is linked to immaturity all the time, and then thought about how this fits into the inverse stereotype of lesbians as the old unwed cat lady, and how these are both part of the same misogynist narrative: a woman is bisexual when she’s young and attractive and trying to gain male attention, and she retires as a lesbian when no man wants her. It’s all an attempt to revolve w/w attraction around men, all misogyny.
