“As the gay movement expands and becomes more assimilated, people who are not so easily assimilated will feel marginalized. Their marginalization creates another round of resistance. It’s an inefficient and somewhat embarrassing process, but it’s also extremely invigorating and democratic.” – Jeffrey Escoffier, July 1994

For many in the gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities, the massive celebrations surrounding the 25th anniversary of Stonewall—culminating in the Stonewall 25 Parade on June 26, 1994, twenty-three years ago today—were a hard-earned opportunity to reflect on how far the gay community had come since 1969. For many others, however, Stonewall 25 was yet another example of the mainstream queer community’s myopic vision of “gay liberation.”
.
A number of militant groups—including ACT UP, the Lesbian Avengers, Spirit of Stonewall (SOS), and Transgender Menace—voiced their frustrations with the official march, and a coalition formed.
.
“Queers have been getting thrown out of things for years by straight people,“ SOS member Bill Dobbs said, “and now gay people are getting on their high horses and throwing some gay people out of the movement.”
.
Most clearly excluded from the main events was the transgender community; Stonewall 25, for example, was officially a “Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Event” despite calls for inclusion of “Transgender” in the title. In response, and in recognition of her decades of tireless activism, Sylvia Rivera was asked to lead the alternative march.
.
Most sources today incorrectly provide that Rivera was honored at Stonewall 25, implying that the official organization recognized her contributions to the movement. While participants in the alternative march gave Rivera the respect she earned, it is not the case that she was honored by Stonewall 25 itself. #HavePrideInHistory #Resist #Pride2017 (at Flatiron Building)

if ur cis dont fucking tell trans people they’re pretending to be trans. i dont care if you’re not straight. the trans intracommunity discussion on dysphoria is not for you to fucking touch.

If you’re trans don’t tell people they’re pretending either, though.

It feels like this is giving respectability politics and invalidating trans/nb/gq people more authenticity than it deserves, as long as the person invalidating trans people is trans themself. Framing those things as an “intracommunity discussion” is really harmful.

A man saying “there are only two genders, and genderqueer is not one of them, so you’re just pretending” (to put the typical position kindly) is not okay, regardless of whether that man is cis or trans. Even if he frames it as just a political opinion or an intracommunity discussion, that doesn’t change what it is and the harm it does.

I get that this post isn’t directed at trans people, but intentionally or not, it legitimizes treating people’s identities as a debate in the first place.

transfemcore:

you can’t fault trans people for finding appeal in separatism when there are literally a very significant chunk of people who use the acronym lgb, talk of dropping the t, and consistently are some of the most transphobic people yet somehow gets a seat in lgbtq+ spaces (and has influenced our movement largely for decades now)..

you legit cannot fault people for not finding appeal in anything outside of having a trans community when the greater community has been like this.

whitetaakosarecursed:

I’m gonna be That Guy again and say that making “destroy gender” jokes is culturally insensitive.

There are genders that have existed for thousands of years in nonwhite cultures across the globe and in some societies these genders are held as a vital sacred part of the community. Intentional or not, you’re insinuating that these genders are inherently bad and should be destroyed when you mean the white gender binary.

I know that gender is a construct, but keep in mind there were societies that had this construct created in a healthy manner. There are several out there who are clinging so desperately to a gender that was nearly destroyed for fucking real by white supremacy, don’t you dare try to act progressive while making a joke that was almost or even became a horrific reality to some.

Hey can cis women stop doing this to trans women’s posts, its incredibly disrespectful and unless you’re going to end it with “I agree” / ”I support this” (spoiler alert none of them said this) leave us the fuck alone with your cis nonsense, we don’t fucking need it.

Also if you leave “as a female” like the first one i will literally come to your house and kill you.

Here’s the idea of this post, for those who don’t understand.
When you as a cis woman come to a trans woman’s post and derail it and make it all about you “as a cis woman”, you don’t help us at all, you just show how obnoxiously self centered you are and that you couldn’t give two shits about us.
