In response to Mike Cernovich telling someone to fuck off after that someone misgendered Chelsea Manning, someone responded this to Mike’s tweet. There are several other comments getting at basically this same point.

Why do I post this? Because this tells us something about why men behave the way they do towards trans women. For men, there is a fear of contamination. A sort of: If I am nice to trans women does it mean I am one?

And of course, who would want to be one of us? Who would want to be such a reviled thing. And so, cruelty towards the thing reviled is a means of distancing oneself from that thing.

Trans women present men with the fact that they *could* be something else. And that to become that something else they would lose their social status. Our existence denaturalizes patriarchal domination. It tells them “your power can be taken away”

And so, when men see a trans woman like Chelsea hurting, they spit on her and take the time to attack her, to call for her suicide. Because they can distance themselves from the possibility of ever being the one spit on and abused.

And men will always suggest that those who don’t treat us like shit, even if only for a brief moment (like Mike here), must actually be one of us. They have to maintain the distancing act and police each other. Its pathetic and sad.

So when someone points to media that predates the 2010s of a problematic character and calls the presentation transphobic, your instinct should NOT to go “Well actually sweaty,,,, the character is obviously just a cis man using gay stereotypes not transphobia so it’s homophobic not transphobic”.

Because while they’re not the same, homophobia and transphobia has ALWAYS fucking occupied the same space in mainstream media for deviating outside of expected gender norms ESPECIALLY when the shitty characters have been made by privileged people who never had to experience that kind of violence in their god damn lives.

You can never separate homophobia and transphobia enough to say one can’t implicate the other especially when it comes from straight cis people. THIS is why it is so fucking important to remember that sexual and gender identity needs solidarity in this shitty fucking world when the people beating us down don’t fucking care about the specifics.

And like just so it gets said: *part* of the damage of reblogging innocuous posts that were written by TERFs (or REGs) are because often, they aren’t actually innocuous. You just missed the tip-off. The secret buzzword.

Just because you didn’t recognize the violent language doesn’t mean the target didn’t.

So what happens is, you reblog a post that looks like a chill positivity post – and a trans person, or a bi person, or an NB person, or an ace or aro person, now has violent targeted language on their dash that you mistook for being just pro-woman or pro-gay. Language THEY recognize and are wounded by. Language that reminds them that people who hate them are all around them.

So it’s not even purely an issue of “no platforming” shitheads – checking the OP and not reblogging TERFs is also a security measure against sharing violent language that you don’t recognize yourself.

Good posts to steal from TERFs: software tips, cute animal appreciation, screencaps and transcriptions of general-interest offsite content (although if it’s a Twitter thread or something go over it with a fine-toothed comb, and if it’s a news article check that it’s not from a dodgy source.)

Bad posts to steal from TERFs: anything to do with intracommunity discourse or gender and sexuality. Honestly, why risk it? Even if the thesis is a super obvious idea like “patriarchy exists” they’ll have found some way to plant some fucking creepy coded message in it.

being a transphobe or homophobe is still identity polititics… some of you are pretending you’re anti-idpol or something but are still forming these political stances and identities over other people’s IDs

Do not support Adam (2018)

I recently heard the news that Adam by Ariel Schrag will be getting a movie. I read the book myself about a year and a half ago and I cannot stress enough just how problematic it is.

Adam is a book about a cis boy pretending to be a trans man in order to trick a lesbian into dating him.

Adam goes to New York to stay with his lesbian sister for the summer, and while he’s there he meets trans men who consider themselves lesbians. At a party he meets a lesbian he thinks is pretty and in order to get into a relationship with her he lies and tells her he’s a pre transition trans man. Let’s make a list of some of the highlights from the book, shall we?

  • At the very beginning of the book his sister and her girlfriend visit home and Adam and his friend spies on them having sex.
  • Almost all the trans men in the book identify as lesbians, implying that they are still women because they haven’t transitioned yet.
  • Adam, a cis straight boy, tells a lesbian that he is a trans man to trick her into dating him.
  • Incidentally Adam is 17 I believe, pretending to be 21. His girlfriend is in the 23 range, I don’t recall exactly.
  • There are explicit sex scenes, the first of which involved Adam using an ace bandage to hold his erection down and using a strapon to have sex with her.
  • In the second one he claims to be using a strapon but is, in reality, using his actual penis.
  • Which is fucking rape.
  • The book doesn’t try to justify this, it somehow manages to do something worse.
  • This second scene is one of the last in the book. After he pulls out he lays down next to her and confesses that he’s not trans. She responds “I know.”
  • She says after they first had sex she started fantasizing about him as a “real guy” (yes quote) and that the image stuck in her mind and she started subconsciously imagining him with a penis.
  • And it gets worse.
  • So he goes back to ohio and she sleeps with other girls (because for some reason she decides not to break up with this cis 17 year old who lied about his identity literally raped her) and one night he gets drunk and calls her a bitch and a fucking whore and whatever, and THAT’S apparently the point she thinks that maybe they should break up.
  • And one day they message eachother to catch up i think maybe he graduated at this point idk but hes planning on visiting his sister in new york and they wanna meet up and
  • She tells him about her new boyfriend.
  • Get ready for it
  • Cis. Man.

So. We have

An underage cishet boy lying about being an adult trans man in order to trick a lesbian into dating him!

A scene in which he actually rapes her!

The lesbian in question becomes attracted to cis men making Adam, essentially, conversion therapy!

Ariel Schrag used to sometimes be in my high school for some reason, so I’ve met her in person and let me tell you with just one look at her it becomes obvious that she sees trans men as an advanced form of butch women
